Good day, good folks! I'd like to take a moment to express my infinite appreciation to you guys for supporting this website and my work everywhere else that my words have found a home on the interweb. Your enthusiasm about my writing keeps me motivated to write thank you.

Brown-Skin Lady

February is Black History Month. To celebrate, I've put together a tribute to Black women who rock - or have rocked - this world of ours. The Nguzo Saba admonish us to "define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves" (kujichagulia) and to "do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it" (kuumba). This post celebrates the self-determination (kujichagulia) and creativity (kuumba), as well as the beauty, of the women featured. This is far from a comprehensive list of Black women who rock; these are just some of my personal faves. I had alot of fun putting this together....I hope you enjoy it!

Last, but definitely not least, I'd like to spotlight DJ Beverly Bond. Her vision for a brighter future for young women of color prompted her to found Black Girls Rock, Inc., a mentoring organization aimed at breaking down the walls that mainstream media has built to keep young women of color trapped in cycles of low self-esteem, hypersexuality and exploitation. Black Girls Rock, Inc. accomplishes this goal by presenting girls with creative outlets through which to channel their talents, accountability and inspiration through positive female role models, and motivation to do more, be more and have more by introducing them to college options. WANLS salutes DJ Beverly Bond!

It's OK...I'm With the Band: Game Rebellion

In my ongoing visual stimulus series, "It's OK I'm With the Band," I bring you pictures of yours truly with the bands that I feature on this site. Here I am with some of my favorite rockers from NYC, Game Rebellion. All photos are by Scott La Rockwell, the Canon Whisperer (I just interviewed him, as well....coming soon!). Click on the pics for a larger view.

The guys put on an insanely hot show in San Francisco that night. You can view the rest of the pics here.

Game Rebellion's newest release, "Sounds Like a Riot" is available now on iTunes...I haven't taken it out of my rotation since I purchased it. You should all go buy it're already in front of the computer...what are you waiting on? Support awesome people who make awesome music. Unless you're ok with the weeny-pop that the radio tells you to listen to.......I didn't think so! This is not a game.....this is rebellion!!!

Pretty Neat...

Whether you're a fan of these people or not, I think this is one hell of a picture.... All sorts of folks together in one place...for one cause {::HAITI::}. That's pretty dopalicious. {Even if some of these folks have horrible weeny-pop songs...I'm just sayin'.}

Amor y luz....
