Entrevista: The Cocker Spaniels

I love lemonade. I love Houston. I love my boyfriend. I also love singular types with plural names. The first thing I ever found out about The Cocker Spaniels was the one man band factor. My first taste of The Cocker Spaniels' music was a song called "Touch My Hair." I knew then C. Spaniels was an artist after my own afro-headed heart:) It's been a long time coming, and I'm glad to finally bring this interview to you guys. Enjoy!
WANLS: Tell me the Cocker Spaniels story.

CS: My name is Sean Padilla. I sing and play almost everything on my recordings, and I perform solo with my guitar and some backing tracks. I started the Cocker Spaniels with two of my best friends in 1994, when I still lived in my hometown of Brooklyn, NY. We had a Sebadoh-like arrangement in which each of us sang, wrote songs, and traded instruments. I was the worst musician but the most prolific songwriter, so I ended up being the de facto "leader." I came up with the name after overhearing some of my female cousins rant about how all men are "dogs." I thought to myself, "If I'm gonna be a dog, I might as well be a cute and shaggy one." C.Spaniels became a one-man band when I moved to Texas three years later, and had no choice but to sing and play everything myself.

WANLS: Throw your set up!

CS: I live in Austin, TX now. I used to LOVE the city, but my love has turned into ambivalence over the last few years due to various factors: numerous upheavals in my personal life; the city's de facto segregation of POCs (people of color), particularly Blacks; and the increasing insularity and homogeneity of its music scene. In my opinion, Houston's independent music scene is kicking Austin's ass as far as the quality of its music, the diversity of its participants, and the autonomy of its infrastructure is concerned. However, Austin's superior public transportation system and my awesome day job keep me here, so I plan to spend 2010 trying to rekindle the flame.

WANLS: Do you identify with a particular genre?

CS: I play rock music, but I take so much influence from so many other genres (R&B, gospel, electronic, jazz, and various forms of Latin music) that it never seems to fit snugly into any one of them.

WANLS: Who or what are your musical influences?

CS: Prince, the Beatles, Guided by Voices, John & Alice Coltrane, J Dilla, My Bloody Valentine, and Public Enemy.

WANLS: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?

CS: I usually tell them that my music is an attempt to sound like Prince and the Beatles simultaneously while singing a diary of my life. It usually piques their interest.

WANLS: What's been happening with the Cocker Spaniels so far in 2010?

CS: The biggest news I have to tell you is that "Sometimes You've Gotta
Fight to Get a Bit of Peace" is being licensed by a small label in California called Hornbuckle Records for official release. I'll have a definitive date once the label owner and my graphic designer stop nitpicking over the artwork. But we're shooting for a July release.

WANLS: What are some of your most memorable shows?

CS: I played a show at the Cellar Bar in Houston with Ghormeh Sabzi and Ghost Mountain. All of us played well, and sounded nothing like each other; we drew a sizable crowd full of friends and strangers, all of whom stuck around for the whole show; we all had a good time; and I even made a bit of money, despite not charging a cover. This past August, I played a show at Red 7 in Austin with Taqwacore (Muslim punk rock) bands the Kominas and Sarmust. Both acts were unique, energetic, and brilliant, and I had a great time rocking out with them on stage and bonding with them off-stage. My most memorable show outside of Texas took place this past June at a house called Baby Sale in Boise, ID. I played in a packed garage decorated with Christmas lights, with a makeshift microphone stand constructed from a lamp and duct tape. People were BBQing and having watergun fights all around me, and the bathtub was full of beach balls. I didn't make much money, but I don't think I've EVER had as much fun at one of my own shows.

WANLS: Tell me about your in-studio/music making process.

CS: I write songs almost every day, most of which don't get recorded due to a lack of time and/or money. My songs take anywhere from 20 minutes to five years to write. I constantly tweak the music and lyrics of my songs until they're finally recorded. I use a digital 24-track and four studio-quality microphones that I saved up for two years to buy. I do everything piecemeal wherever I can: in my apartment, in other people's houses, in professional studios, and even outdoors if necessary. Sometimes I let guests participate in the recording process, but only if they can add something to the song that I can't add myself.

WANLS: Which do you prefer: studio time/creating new music or touring/live shows?

CS: I used to greatly prefer writing and recording to performing due to a years-long battle with stage fright. I won that battle, though, so I love performing ALMOST as much as I do writing and recording. "Studio time" still gets the upper hand, though, because I'm a bit of a tech geek, and like looking for new ways to manipulate sound.

WANLS: What’s your fantasy show or tour line up?

CS: I'd like to book a national tour consisting of me, Fat Tony, B L A C K I E & Love Field and call it "Four the Black Way." It would be a month-long "dudes' night out" that would spark a musical and social revolution.

WANLS: Describe what its like to experience your live shows.

CS: "Wait a minute: where's the band? Damn, this is loud. I kinda like this, but I hope he doesn't come near me."

WANLS: What’s one thing that people would never guess about you?

CS: People would never guess that I used to be an MC before I started the Cocker Spaniels.

WANLS: Best thing about being in your band?

CS: Never having to worry about bandmates being late to shows or seducing your girlfriends.

WANLS: What does the summer show schedule look like?

CS: I have one Austin show each booked for June and July, but other than that, no plans to perform live until the album is released. Once the album is released, I want to do a month-long tour of the Midwest and East Coast.

WANLS: The whole world flocks to Austin for SXSW, but what's it like to be a musician in ATX the rest of the year? What's the Austin music scene like? Is there unity amongst the artist community?

CS: I can only speak for myself when it comes to the Austin music scene. It's hard for me to get shows because neither my music nor my performance style are aligned with anything that's currently trendy in the city, and I'm often too busy or antisocial to network with the "movers and shakers." Also, Austin's music scene is undergoing the same kind of gentrification that every other major city with a flourishing music scene undergoes. To be honest, if it wasn't for one Black-owned indie-rock venue in east Austin, I wouldn't play here more than a handful of times a year.

WANLS: Tell me more about that venue....let's give some local love. You can give the name and location that way we can rep for them in the interview too.

CS: The venue is Club 1808 on 12th and Chicon. Both the owner Gene and its main agent Ethan are very nice people with a diverse and open-minded approach to booking. The bartender, who I think is Gene's son, makes an especially tasty drink called "Pink Panties."

WANLS: Have you ever played SXSW? Do you feel that the new juggernaut status of SXSW is good for local (Texas) artists?

CS: I had an official SXSW showcase in 2006, but other than that, every SXSW performance I've ever done has been an unofficial day show. As much as I love SXSW from a fan's perspective, I don't stress over it too much from an artist's perspective. I don't think SXSW can do anything for me on a local or national scale. Any method of promotion whose target audience is industry people instead of music fans (and yes, I acknowledge the overlap between those two groups) is a method of promotion that I don't wanna be bothered with.

Brown-Skin Lady

February is Black History Month. To celebrate, I've put together a tribute to Black women who rock - or have rocked - this world of ours. The Nguzo Saba admonish us to "define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves" (kujichagulia) and to "do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it" (kuumba). This post celebrates the self-determination (kujichagulia) and creativity (kuumba), as well as the beauty, of the women featured. This is far from a comprehensive list of Black women who rock; these are just some of my personal faves. I had alot of fun putting this together....I hope you enjoy it!

Black Girls Rock, Inc. accomplishes this goal by presenting girls with creative outlets through which to channel their talents, accountability and inspiration through positive female role models, and motivation to do more, be more and have more by introducing them to college options. Broke-Ass Stuart and I met {briefly} at a party at D-Structure in San Francisco once. I guarantee he doesn't remember it, as there was free all-you-can-drink-til-it-runs-out beer at this party. But I remember. I was serving the abovementioned cerveza gratis and when Stuart came to the counter, I gave him beer and he gave me a sticker that read "You Are Young Broke and Beautiful." I thought it was pretty awesome {and accurate}. To make the long story short, I visited the website printed on the bottom of the sticker, brokeassstuart.com, and by the time I got to the bottom of the homepage, Broke-Ass Stuart was my new hero. Since then, I've visited the site tons of times, and, I don't usually do website reviews, but I felt this one was well-deserved. So this is officially the first in my new "Sometimes I Like Other People's Websites Too" series.

Broke-Ass Stuart is a recession-busting connoisseur of the [affordable} good life. His site consists of articles, reviews and listings related to getting the most out of life on a budget. Its like a CitySearch/Yelp/Magazine with all of the irrelevant/boring/expensive sections filtered out. Its catered to the young adult crowd - still in or not too long out of college...too old to rely on our parents for financial support, yet still working out the kinks in our "savings" plans. Stuart has also written 2 books: "Broke-Ass Stuart's Guide to Living Cheaply in New York City" and "Broke Ass Stuart's Guide to Living Cheaply in San Francisco" (Sierra Says: Wish I would have known about that one a long time ago!). You can also get "Young, Broke and Beautiful" t-shirts (I WILL GET ONE OF THESE BEFORE I LEAVE SF!) and stickers on the official Broke-Ass Stuart website. Yes, we ARE young, broke and beautiful and we just want to have a good time.....man, it's like Stuart knows us. :)

Entrevista: The Park

This may come as somewhat of a shock {ha!}, but I have seen my fair share of bands play. I've heard some that I've enjoyed and I've also heard some that made me wish I could switch my hearing on and off at will. Every now and then, I hear a band that's teeming with such indisputably raw and audacious talent, that its effect on me is both inspiring and humbling and it reminds me why I have chosen to document music as I do. On a Wednesday night in 2009, shortly after I moved to San Francisco, I had the pleasure and privilege of meeting a band called The Park. Though you can frequently find them rocking a stage in front of a packed arena, or backing up an artist on tour, on this night, The Park played in a tiny bar called Royale in San Francisco's North Beach Neighborhood. Long before entering Royale, I was greeted by intoxicating musical libations being offered up into the atmosphere. As I got closer to the door, the sound became more distinct and it seemed to weave itself in and around me, drawing me in like only music can. I entered to find The Park's jam session in full swing...it was absolutely amazing. The whole night I was on the edge of my seat...I mean these guys had to be a superhuman mutant band or something....they were that good...I was that entertained. I knew from the moment I walked in that this was no ordinary night and this absolutely was not an ordinary band. These guys were PROFESSIONALS in every sense of the word. This was The Park and this music was rock-you-down-to-your-soul REAL. Known for their versatility and ability to make everything they touch turn to musical gold, The Park has backed everyone from freestyle rappers who sit in on the Wednesday night sessions to Bay Area legends such as Darondo to British soulstress Alice Russell, with whom the band regularly tours. They are respected musicians, in the Bay Area and beyond. I'm {very} proud to bring you this interview with one of the hardest working and crit-diculously gifted bands I've ever heard. Ladies and gentlemen....The Park!

WANLS: Introduce me to the band members and whether they play/sing/etc.

WANLS: Throw your sets up! Where do you live and why do you love it?

THE PARK: We love living in San Francisco, because of the food!

WANLS: What are your musical influences?

THE PARK: Life.

WANLS: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?

WANLS: Do you have or are you signed to a record label?

THE PARK: We are independent artists. We have been signed with projects in the past but now we only deal with the labels of the artists we are working with. There isn't much need for a label right now with the kind of thing we are doing. We have label interest and when the time comes with a deal that makes sense we would consider it.

WANLS: What are some of your most memorable shows?

THE PARK: The PST closing. {Sierra Says: PST was a loooong running party/club night in San Francisco that featured TONS of amazing live shows and some of the best DJ's from the Bay Area and beyond.} We got a chance to back up some of our favorite Bay artists like Martin Luther, Zion I, Res, Boots Riley, Trackademicks, Jesse Boykins III, Silk E...great family event.

Also, selling out the Troubador in LA with Alice Russell, the first show with Darondo...worrying if he was even going to make it down the staircase to the stage (because he was frail and a little buzzed), and then watching him do the splits on stage with the ease of James Brown in his twenties.

WANLS: Who writes your music?

THE PARK: Most of our work is a collaboration. Josh and I have our own writing style and usually provide most of the harmonic framework and D is equally involved in creating the feel and arranging. Our strengths as writers/arrangers/producers lie in taking an idea or motif and then building and expanding on it as a group. It's kind of a telepathy we share from the years of playing together. All of our individual strengths play off of each other.
Derek adds: "Like whales."

WANLS: What direction do you see the band going in 2010? Any specific plans?

THE PARK: Taking over the world one gig, studio session, and tour at a time...

WANLS: Your fantasy show or tour line up?

THE PARK: The Park Presents Tour (similar to La Pena shows/all our fam/circa Okayplayer '99 Maritime Hall San Francisco).

THE PARK: We have/do experience the craziest spectrum of life. We have played dog shows as well as festivals with 20,000 people and room service. One day we are drinking goose and champagne in New York; the next day we are squeezing into one car with all of our gear on the way to hold down our local session in North Beach. It's part of the process and we just try and enjoy the ride.

WANLS: Fill in the blank: One day they're probably gonna name a ___ after our band.

WANLS: Last and most importantly, if you were stranded on a desert island with your bandmates, who would go cannibal first?

New Music Video from A Dream Asleep + Show Dates...Oh Boy!

Check out the brand new video from A Dream Asleep! Its the first video release from the band's latest, "We Are the Juggernauts." The track is called "Horus -vs- The Juggernauts." 10 Things to Love About 2010

1. 311 Day in Vegas

Let me preface this with a statement: I LOVE 311! They are, in fact, my favorite band. Period. Deal with that however you choose :) 311 is on the road allllll the time, and that's how its been for years now. For nearly ten years now, on 3/11 (that's March 11th for all you special ones), the band plays a special show (usually in New Orleans, LA) with a longer set than usual and an expanded set list....which thrills the ride-or-die 311 fans. (The 2006 311 Day show was 5 hours long and featured a 66-song set list!!!) This year, the show will take place in America's grown-up playground, LAS VEGAS!!! The 2010 festivities include a fan party, 2 shows on 3/11 (daytime and evening) and a beach party featuring their tour guests, The Wailers.

Tickets may be hard to come by this late in the game, but go to 311's official website for more info.

2. SXSW

For anyone who has ever attended the mecca of a music festival in Austin, TX, the name says it all. Invaluable networking, exclusive and intimate performances and inspiration to keep creating for the next 11 months until it's time to do it all again! I remember South By Southwest back in the 90's, when most of the attendees and performers were from Texas. Today, more than twenty years since their first production, SXSW is internationally recognized as a must-attend event for industry folks and music lovers alike.

The festival features live music, industry networking events, film screenings and much much MUCH more. I will be in attendance at this year's festival, which runs from March 12-21. Hope to see you guys there!

3. Coachella

Only hours ago the 2010 Coachella lineup was announced. Among the 130 acts that will grace the stage in Indio, CA this year are Devo, Tiësto, Grizzly Bear, De La Soul, Faith No More, Gil Scott-Heron, Them Crooked Vultures, Jay Z, The Raveonettes, Public Image Limited, Wale, MGMT, Sly and the Family Stone, Bassnectar, Pavement, MUTEMATH and Corinne Bailey Rae (I LOVE HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

As if Coachella's lineup wasn't reason enough to attend, the festival's powers that be offer LAYAWAY TICKETS! What do you say boys and girls???? Altogether now: THANK YOU COACHELLA! This year's festival is April 16, 17 and 18. All information (including info on camping and car camping for all you hardcore music fest fans) is available on Coachella's official website.

4. Austin City Limits

This year's ACL will be held at Zilker Park in Austin (duh) October 8-10. While the 2010 lineup won't be announced until later this year, ACL's past leave us thirsty for more and waiting with baited breath to find out who will rock the stage this year.

Mos Def, Kings of Leon, Eek-A-Mouse and Yeah Yeah Yeahs were among the numerous 2009 acts...this makes me very hopeful for 2010:)

The best way to stay in the know on all things ACL is to get connected online in one of the 7, yes 7, convenient ways offered: find ACL on Facebook, Twitter or MySpace; sign up for email or mobile alerts; keep up with the official ACL message board or the official ACL blog.

I love love love Mos Def and I love love love his 2009 release, The Ecstatic, which I'm sure will comprise much of his set list at ACL this year (at least I'm hoping it will). I really wanted to post my favorite track from the album for you guys....its called "Life in Marvelous Times," but there's no official video for it. So please excuse the lameness of the fan-made video that I found on YouTube and enjoy the track:)

5. VANS Warped Tour

For the love of Punk! This year the Warped Tour turns sweet 16...well, as sweet as a punks can get:) Warped Tour will forever remind me of good times in the summer as a teenager. My friends and I were faithful attendees of Warped Tour back in those days. We'd plan for it for months and then in the few days before, we'd get our parents to drop us at the mall so that we could find the PERFECT t-shirt to wear...lol. So much fun. Well, my friends and I are pushing 30 now, but Warped Tour still makes me smile. Not only is there no shortage of music to make you move (or mosh...whatever you like), but Warped Tour has plenty of other things happening to keep you entertained. When you're not watching the bands perform, you can watch skaters or BMXers do their thing on the ever present Warped Tour ramps.

This year's lineup doesn't dissapoint, featuring acts such as Agent Orange, We the Kings, The Fabulous Rudies, Of Mice and Men and (this is not a joke) Sum 41....we'll see how that last one works out...I was actually a fan when they debuted, not so sure now...lol. Warped Tour runs June 24th through August 15th. That's alot of dates, which is cool because you can bet the show is coming to your city or one near by. All the info is available here. 6. Lollapalooza - http://www.lollapalooza.com/

August 6-8, Grant Park Chicago.
Beats, rhymes, guitars and moshing. Lollapalooza was founded in 1991 by Jane's Addiction singer, Perry Farrell. Since then, with a brief hiatus between 1997 and 2003, Lollapalooza has provided the stage for some of the best live musical performances of the past 2 decades. From Archie Bell to Alice in Chains to A Tribe Called Quest and many more, the festival's gargantuan lineup always includes a little something for everyone. Check out this list of Lollapalooza lineups past!

The interweb is abuzz with rumors, but this year's official lineup is yet to be announced. Early Bird passes to the festival have been sold out since August '09, so be sure to stay tuned to the latest happenings on the official Lollapalooza website to be in the know when regular tickets go on sale. Bonus: a portion of the proceeds from Lollapalooza ticket sales are donated to the Parkways Foundation. Music on a mission....now that's good stuff.

7. New Interpol Album Release

In 2002, Interpol exploded onto the national scene and sonically illuminated the world with their debut studio release "Turn on the Bright Lights." 3 albums and 6 EP's later, Interpol announced in 2009 that they were working on a brand new album to be released at some point this year.

While fans have never turned their back on the NYC four-piece, it's no secret that there are high hopes for a return to the Interpol of the "Turn on the Bright Lights" days. We shall see... The band's official website is quite cryptic, at the moment, but I would imagine this will change as the album release date approaches.

8. Lilith Fair

Contrary to what many believe, Lilith Fair is not some sort of over-the-top-hardcore-feminist-man-hating-go-girl rally. It is a celebration of women and our {amazing} creative energy. Founded by Sheryl Crow in 1996, Lilith Fair was one of the highest grossing touring festivals in the world from 1997 to 1999. Past Lilith lineups have included a wide range of notables spanning multiple genres, including the Dixie Chicks, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Fiona Apple, Tracy Chapman and, of course, the show's creator, Sarah McLachlan.

2010 marks the return of Lilith Fair after just over a decade-long hiatus! The entire lineup has not been announced, but a few of the already confirmed acts have me way excited: Corinne Bailey Rae, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott....those three alone are reason enough for me to want to attend!!! 33 cities have been announced so far and there's more to come, so stay tuned to the official Lilith Fair website for details on show dates, lineup announcements and ticket sales.

9. Outkast!?!?

Of all the announcements in this post, this is by far my favorite. Andre 3000 and Big Boi are each releasing solo albums in 2010. According to news sources, if the solo projects are well received, a new Outkast album can be expected. I almost peed in my pants when I heard this. Although I hope in my heart of hearts that this will come to pass, this is not {yet} an official announcement that the album is in the works.

If this is true, then this album will be a long awaited answered prayer for legions of die-hard fans who have dreamed about this day for years now. The level of originality and raw talent the duo possesses have yet to be matched by any others. Their chemistry is magical...their delivery is absolutely incredible. Outkast, I wish you all the best for your solo albums and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the group release...because the whole world loves it when you make that sound;)

10. LCD Soundsystem Tour

Producer/musician extraordinaire/really funny and creative dude who makes music that makes me want to dance, James Murphy AKA LCD Soundsystem is packing up his live show supporting band types and going on tour! I could say some things about it, but LCD can say it even better. The refreshingly straight forward latest update on the official LCD Soundsystem website is titled "basically we're announcing a tour." Check it out:

This show was magical. So magical in fact that they threw it on the re-released enhanced CD of In Search Of... This show was the epitome of what I have been enlisted to do as an artist. So I was stumbling around the internet and I came across an Austrian commercial for European wireless phone company, 3 Mobile (or simply 3). What's so cool about that, you ask? The track playing on the commercial is "Another Fine Lesson in the Art of Cool" by Ezra Bang & Hot Machine! WANLS loves those guys (and gals). In March I will be moving from San Francisco to the greatest city in the world, Houston, TX. As you may have gleaned from previous posts, Houston is my hometown and there is definitely no place like it, in my opinion. As I prepare to leave the Bay Area I'm reflecting on the culture and community that I will be leaving behind. In that spirit, I have decided to post a series of interviews with Bay Area movers, shakers and whatnot (don't you just love that word?...hehe).

First up is The Whooligan. I've had the occasion to witness the craft of many dj's since I've been here in the Bay, and of those, very few have actually impressed me. The Whooligan most definitely has. As genuine personally as he is ridiculously talented on his turntables, Whoo is a staple in the Bay Area's music scene. WANLS: Tell me who you are and what you do in three sentences.

WHOO: My name is Julio Galvez and I am known as The Whooligan. I am a resident DJ and producer for a variety of clubs and collectives; some include 40Love, Sole Vibe Music Group, The Park, Foreign Legion, Eve Lounge and Om Records. I am co-founder of the #cRitGAWD special: eggs, spinach, brown rice, hashbrowns & coffee- pretty much a standard 'round these parts.

WANLS: What's the last song you listened to?

WHOO: My roommate and brother-from-another, Derek Taylor (drummer of famed rhythm section The Park) just put me onto John Mayer's new album, "Battle Studies." It's 7:45AM and I listened to the LP front to back on the way home from the airport. A peaceful morning in the Bay with a great sound track and beautiful tones. As I am writing this interview though, I'm listening to DJ Sneak live @ the Forum in Waterford, Ireland 2008- definitely in need of some coffee now.

WANLS: What gets you started in the morning?

WHOO: Woah, woah, woah. Take it easy...

WANLS: Fill in the blanks: If it hadn't been for ______, I would have_____.

WHOO: If it hadn't been for witnessing my parent's late nights playing salsa records, drinking wine, dancing and enjoying company (as a very young child), I would have never known the true essence of sharing good music with the people you love most.

WANLS: What's #1 on your priority list right now?

WHOO: Connecting with my people, your people, their people, our people and spreading love. All day, every day. And you know, that other stuff like paying my bills and staying healthy.

WANLS: Fill in the blanks: Everybody should listen to _______, because _______.

WHOO: Everybody should listen to whatever moves them. Don't pigeon-hole yourself. Listen to it all, even if you think you will absolutely despise it. Appreciate music for good or for bad, because whether you're feeling it or not, there was a process involved to create and capture something pure. Fela, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Osunlade, Flying Lotus, Nina Simone and Johnny Cash never hurt nobody either.

WANLS: Fill in the blank: People would never guess that _______.

WHOO: People would never guess that I am of Buddhist spiritual beliefs and chant on the daily. I give thanks to those who came before me and will eventually follow me. Self reflection has changed my life.

WANLS: Fill in the blank: Ten years ago, I just knew I ________.

WHOO: Ten years ago, I just knew I wanted to play professional soccer. As a kid, it was always salsa records and soccer. That's all we could afford to eat. I played competitively growing up and a couple years in college. I am super thankful to have met someone who would later refer me to Amoeba Music. For 5+ years, I worked next to some of the smartest and most knowledgeable music nerds west of the Mississippi. The rest is history.

WANLS: But as long as I can listen to _______'s music, I know everything will be alright.

WHOO: But as long as I can listen to music, I know everything will be alright. House, Broken Beat, Salsa, Classical, Hip Hop, Trip Hop, Techno, Boogie, Rare Groove, Soul, Jazz, Afrobeat, Bhangra, Rock, etc etc and so much more. Bring that chit on, mane.

WANLS: Throw your set up! Where do you live and why do you love it?

WHOO: I love living in San Francisco because of the people, the culture, the weather, the music, the food, the inspiration, the record nerds, the sunday fundays, the herb, the best bartenders, artists, promoters and service professionals in the world, and because our afterhours parties trump yours. I'm just sayin though.

WHOO: One day they're probably gonna name a Nacho Libre remake after me. Pfffft!

WANLS: Favorite gig so far?

WHOO: I would have to say my favorite gig so far was rockin with a marketing company in NYC, as well as MTV a couple years back. For a few years I was on national tours opening for folks like Diplo, Rick Ross, Lupe Fiasco, Kid Sister, Buggz in the Attic, Plain White T's, Brooke Hogan, Taylor Swift, Lloyd, Bobby Valentino and hella other artists rocking 8,000+ crowds. But really though? My MOST favorite gig? Life, because one day we rock for 10,000 people and another day we rock for 10. Experience is everything.

WANLS: Fantasy gig?

WHOO: My fantasy gig is to tour the world with my friends and family. One super wild festival tour with everyone I love to listen to and rock with on the daily. Peace and Love.

WANLS: Tell me where you see or would like to see the Bay Area's music scene head this year.

WHOO: Honestly, I would like to see everyone step their LIFE game up. Too much petty beef, too many childish mistakes and too many people saying they want to do this and connect with this person... which never happens. Again, being on both sides of the artist/business spectrum, I see and hear a lot nonsense that honestly saddens me. How you live your life and how you treat your neighbors and community dictates the music you create. The Bay Area is too fresh and musically diverse to not be recognized on a national level. No offense, but really? Hyphy is the only "genre" known to come out of the Bay? We create beautiful soul music; hip hop to house and it's time the world recognizes our talents. How is this going to happen? Genuine support, honest communication and love for the energy and hard work we all, male and female, put into our craft. And I'm not saying you have to connect with everyone who makes music or everyone who claims they can rock a party. If you're not feeling it, you're not feeling it, and that's ok- just keep it to yourself and stay positive. In the words of Jay Electronica, "Someone being great takes ABSOLUTELY nothing away from YOUR greatness. Stop Hating."

Today in Rock History: Sex Pistols

On this day in 1978, punk pioneers the Sex Pistols played their final show together. Known for jump-starting the punk movement, the London natives changed rock and roll forever, influencing the music of bands from Pure Hell to H2O to Sum 41.

Although they had more than their share of pitfalls (including bassist Sid Vicious being charged in the stabbing death of his longtime lover, Nancy Spungen), the Sex Pistols will forever be icons in the world of rock.

Entrevista: thelastplaceyoulook!!!!!!!

thelastplaceyoulook is hot…and by hot I mean 9000 degrees-ready-to-spontaneously-combust-at-any-moment-making-brimstone-feel-like-ice HOT! These dudes had one hell of a year in 2009 and ended it by dominating the Texas Buzz Music Awards, snagging Best Alternative Band of the Year and both guitarists snagging Best Guitar honors. To top it all off, they are from my hometown (HOUSTONNNNNN!) so I’m uber stoked to bring this interview to you guys. I’m so proud of them for all of their success and can’t wait to see what 2010 holds for this talented bunch. How many times do I have to tell ya'll???? HOUSTON ROCKS!!!!!! POW!

WANLS: Tell me the name of your band, how it came about, if you ever went by another name and how you guys formed a band.

LPYL: thelastplaceyoulook. ( all one word because we like it that way ) Before thelastplaceyoulook formed, Justin Nava ( who only goes by "Nava" ) was putting together an acoustic project with a few friends. The bass player at the time was going though some lyrics of Nava's and stumbled upon "the last place you look" as a great name to begin the project.
Nava was in a funk band previous know as "Six West" with guitarist Richard Sherwood. After a few years, "Six West" had more member changes than you can count and finally faded out.
Richard and Nava were on a mission to put some music together and started the hunt for more "stable" band mates. Nava found Drummer Andy Moths at an Acoustic Mic Night at Helios playing guitar to Dashboard confessional covers. After a few nights of hanging out Andy confessed he had played drums in a band up in Milwaukee.
Nava's met bassist Kevin Pool through working at Starbucks. Kevin being in a band already called "Nadiri" introduced him to their guitar player whom after a trial show did not dig the music just yet.
Finally, Naridi's guitarist introduced the band to Derek Young, who had been in pop punk band "Mr. Castaway" that had recently disbanded only a few months prior.
Since then the founding members of "thelastplaceyoulook" has always been Nava, Richard, Andy, Kevin and Derek since 2003.

WANLS: Introduce me to the band members and whether they play/sing/etc.

LPYL: Justin Nava (Nava ) - Vocals
Kevin Pool - Bass/Vocals
Richard Sherwood - Guitar
Derek Young - Guitar
Andy Moths - Drums

WANLS: Throw your sets up! Where do you live and why do you love it?

LPYL: We love living in the van, because the smell is intoxicating...or toxic...either one.

WANLS: Do you guys identify with a particular genre?

LPYL: Rock with Indie influences

WANLS: What are your musical influences?

LPYL: Bill Cosby, Thrice, Taking Back Sunday, Mae, James Brown, Little Richard, Chasing Victory, The Used....anything good really.

WANLS: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?

LPYL: We have a balance between pop sensibility and musical intelligence. Well thought out lyrics and driving rhythms create an original edgy sound. We will make your heart swoon before we rip it out and stomp on it.

WANLS: Do you have or are you signed to a record label?

LPYL: No labels, independent baby!

WANLS: What are some of your most memorable shows?

LPYL: We just finished up an epic tour with Universal national artist 10 Years!! One of the best experiences so far!

WANLS: Who writes your music?

LPYL: We all play a part in writing the music in the band. Often times Nava plays the biggest part in the writing because he brings in songs for the rest of the band to interpret. His lyrics and melodies can set the tone for how the songs are written. However the process is never the same each time. In the past a song has been created by just a simple guitar part.

WANLS: Tell me about the in-studio/music making process for your band.

LPYL: We recorded our last full length album with Will Hoffmann (former guitarist of Push Monkey ). He helped formalize our sound we have today. Before we had all types of genres floating in our songs and now with his help we have learned to keep the songs simple and memorable.

WANLS: What direction do you see the band going in 2010? Any specific plans?

LPYL: More Touring with national acts, recording a new demo of about 5 songs. Increasing our fan base in Texas and Louisiana. Maybe making the band our full time job? (cross fingers)

WANLS: Which do you prefer: studio time/creating new music or touring/live shows?

LPYL: I (Derek) can't speak for everyone in the band but....live shows are the biggest payoff!! You get to meet great people at shows that really connect with your music.

WANLS: Your fantasy show or tour line up?

LPYL: Shine Down, Glassjaw, The White Stripes and thelastplaceyoulook on a Brazilian Congo tour. Dope!

WANLS: Describe what it’s like to experience your live shows.

LPYL: There are a lot of dynamics in our songs and you have to be ready for that. We come out pistols blazing with big rock riffs and huge choruses. But we are not scarred to taking it down a notch for songs like "Band to Save Me". Be ready for a roller coaster of emotions!

WANLS: Fill in the blank: If it hadn't been for _______, we would have _________.

LPYL: If it hadn't been for our stubborn idea of brotherhood, we would have broke up by now.

WANLS: Do you have any new music being released soon?

LPYL: We are working on a 5 song EP we plan to record soon in 2010.

WANLS: Do you have any upcoming shows?

LPYL: Yes! In Houston we are playing Thee Armada's farewell show at Warehouse Live on Saturday January 16th. It is going to be a great line up!

WANLS: Are there videos to any of your songs?

LPYL: We recorded a new music video for our single "Don't Make it So Easy", YouTube it!

OURstory: Dead Kennedys

For the love of all things punk, today's OURstory is dedicated to San Francisco, California based Dead Kennedys.In the late 70's/early 80's, the multi-ethnic rockers took America and the rest of the world by storm with their hard-hitting beats and lyrics that boldly poked fun at the political far-right and violence. In true revolutionary form, the band's first single, "California Über Alles" was a ballsy call-out of California's governor at the time. From then on, DK never let fans down and never abandoned their renegade stance.
They get mad respect for using their music to speak to a generation and for having the courage to always stand up for what they believed in, whether it was popular or not. DK toured the entire world throughout the 80's before finally playing their last show where it all began in San Francisco in 1986.

Hellooooo! I apologize for the hiatus but I'm back now and I've got my very first interview from across the pond!!!!!!! I'm so excited to introduce you guys to Sabatta. They hail from the UK, London to be exact, and I'm more than pleased that frontman, Yinka, agreed to answer some questions for WANLS. WANLS: Tell me the name of your band, how it came about, if you ever went by another name and how you guys formed a band.

YINKA: I formed Sabatta in early 2006 – we had different members – it started off as four piece – 2 guitars. Always was the same name but I’ve been solo before. The idea behind Sabatta is just to do rock n roll – but the Sabatta way – Raw!

WANLS: Introduce me to the band members and whether they play/sing/etc.

YINKA: Yinka - vocals, guitar, Hugo Chaves - bass and backing vocals, Nick Roberts - Drums

WANLS: Throw your sets up! Where do you live and why do you love it?

YINKA: We love living in the fast lane, because if you don't it won't be any better on the other side. (Oops – was I meant to say London?)

WANLS: Do you guys identify with a particular genre?

YINKA: Rock, I guess, but it's hard to say one because we've got such diverse influences – which leads us to your next question ;-)

WANLS: What are your musical influences?

YINKA: So many! I like Rock, metal, hip-Hop, Funk, Soul, Afrobeat, some pop, some grime but not necessarily in that order. Hugo likes Funk, Rock. Nick is in to several types of music and is in a few bands - one is folk, one is electronic, etc.

WANLS: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?

YINKA: Acid Rock with a Hip-hop bounce, Hip-Rock or maybe just good music.

WANLS: Do you have or are you signed to a record label?

YINKA: Our first two albums have been put out on my label - Blackfriars Entertainment.

WANLS: What are some of your most memorable shows?

YINKA: Shunt and AfroPunk have probably the most memorable for me but I'd say for all of us it'd be the last Shunt how! Shunt is this amazing cavernous in London Bridge station which is on the London Underground system. It's closed down now so it's a piece of history but it was like a club you see in a movie that you wouldn't think existed but it does, it did - it was crazy in there!

WANLS: Who writes your music?

YINKA: I do. Of course Hugo and Nick lend their own inimitable personalities to what they play and we discuss arrangements and jam them out.

WANLS: Tell me about the in-studio/music making process for your band.

YINKA: Well I'll write a tune - I might bring the riffs to the rehearsal room or I might send the guys demo tracks by email (which I've been doing alot lately). We'll then jam it out in rehearsal and try and gig it - see what the response is and then we'll record the tunes once we've got a bunch done. We were in the studio on December 13th and we put down 6 tracks 4 of which were done like that and the other two we hadn't really jammed - I won't tell you which ones are which!

WANLS: What direction do you see the band going in 2010? Any specific plans?

YINKA: Good question. Yeah think the new songs I've written are more diverse and in a sense have a wide appeal. I've concentrated more on making songs than making genre music so it should be interesting to see how it's received!

WANLS: Which do you prefer: studio time/creating new music or touring/live shows?

YINKA: I think we all enjoy both but we'd also all like to do much more of the latter!

WANLS: Your fantasy show or tour line up?

YINKA: Damn! You got the hardest questions ever! Ok for me it's gonna be ACDC/Metallica/Lenny Kravitz/Living Colour/Sabatta.

WANLS: Describe what it’s like to experience your live shows.

YINKA: It's like being at a ritual of some kind and watching the priest/shamen/babalawo being possessed and sending the congregation into a trance as he surfs on the edge of the abyss! You won't forget it in a hurry! ;-)

WANLS: Fill in the blank: If it hadn’t been for ___, we would have ___.

YINKA: If it hadn't been for weed, we would have jumped off a bridge a long time ago.

WANLS: Do you have any new music being released soon?

YINKA: Yes in March we will be releasing Makes Me Feel Alive from the new as yet untitled album.

WANLS: Do you have any upcoming shows?

YINKA: Doing an acoustic show for balcony.tv on Feb 19. Next June we play 100 Club in London.

YINKA: There are a couple of good live videos up at the moment. We're shooting video this month.

YINKA: To tour as much as possible...across the country and the world.

OURstory: Bad Brains

Bad Brains came together as a band in the late 1970's. They were pioneers in terms of Black Rock music as we know it today and of hardcore punk, in general. Although the Rastafarian rockers have broken up and rearranged a few times over the years, they get mad respect for laying the foundation in the Punk realm with the likes of the Sex Pistols, Black Flag, The Clash and The Ramones.

The Oooh Baby Gimme More's are heating things up north of the border in Toronto, don't cha know! The guys showed major love when the Afro-Punk tour rolled through their town and even graced the stage with Saul Williams! They hold it down 2-deep; rocking hard and never lacking originality! WANLS: Tell me the name of your band, how it came about, if you ever went by another name and how you guys formed a band:

OBGM: We went by several other names like all starter bands do. Densil came to me one day and was like "I had a dream we performed at this concert and after we were done, the girls in the crowd were like 'ooohh baby! gimme more!'" The rest is history. I liked it. He did too. It took us 3 years to form that name.

Originally, we started producing hip hop tracks. Densil bought a guitar and said that we were gonna form a band. I wasn't into the idea, even though I already knew how to play drums. Eventually, he learned, and that caught me off guard. before we knew it, we were seeking new members. After a while, we got fed up with not being able to find the right match, so we stayed as a two piece. The rest is history.

WANLS: Introduce me to the band members and whether they play/sing/etc.

OBGM: Colanthony: Drummer, back up vocals, Densil: Guitar, lead vocals

WANLS: Throw your sets up! We love living in ____________, because ______________.

OBGM: Toronto because healthcare is free in Canada! And there are black people in this city!

WANLS: Do you guys identify with a particular genre?

OBGM: We’re like, a fusion between Punk/New Jack Swing/Electro or something…

WANLS: What are your musical influences?

OBGM: Everything from jazz music to dancehall/reggae. Punk, 80’s pop, Funk. Life is the musical influence

WANLS: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?

OBGM: It sounds like Sex feels… Damn good

WANLS: Do you have or are you signed to a record label?

OBGM: No not as of yet.

WANLS: What are some of your most memorable shows?

OBGM: The AfroPunk festival was definitely a breaching point for our band… having our first international audience was amazing.
The AfroPunk Show where we opened for Saul Williams in our hometown was another breaching point for us. It’s not everyday you can open for a star in your hometown.
My favorite show of all time was A show we had Sept 4th of this year (2009). It was our first crowd that we didn’t know absolutely everyone in the crowd. We got the people moving and dancing… and that’s essentially what the music is for

WANLS: Who writes your music?

OBGM: We both do, but Densil is the craftsman behind the words.

WANLS: Tell me about the in-studio/music making process for your band.

OBGM: We make sure to write & practice songs before we even go to the studio. We don’t like to be in the booth too long because it’s a hassle. An unneeded one too. One that could’ve saved money.

WANLS: What direction do you see the band going in 2010? Any specific plans?

OBGM: We’re planning to be the band to fuck with in 2010; so this means new album, lot’s of releases, iTunes, play lots of shows, etc. We’re also doing a lot of collaborations and production work as well, so we also plan to be the hottest production duo in the country (Canada).

WANLS: Which do you prefer: studio time/creating new music or touring/live shows?

OBGM: I prefer all three of them together… in fact, that’s what we do right now. Excluding the tour.

WANLS: Your fantasy show or tour line up?

OBGM: Like the tour we’d want to be on?! Not sure exactly… I guess it would be something like:
Us, American Fangs, Lightspeed Champion,… I never really thought about it though

What's better than a punk band playing music to make you dance dance dance???? A female-fronted punk band playing music to make you dance dance dance!!! That's exactly what you get with The Revenge of Ricky Williams. I'm loving the energy from this band....good people, good music. I can't wait to see what they have brewing for us in 2010. They agreed to answer a few questions for WANLS, for which, I am extremely grateful. You're going to be smiling when you're done reading this. They're just so much fun....like pop rocks in your mouth:) Oh, and Pam (the super cool frontWOMAN of the band) wasn't feeling too well the other day, so be sure to send some Get Well shouts her way. WANLS: Tell me the name of your band, how it came about, if you ever went by another name and how you guys formed a band.

Pam: Taylor and I were playing music in local coffee shops and open mics as The Pam And Taylor Awesome Band. We played cover songs that we enjoyed, but we wanted to be a full rock band and play original music.
Taylor: The band's name is The Revenge of Ricky Williams. It's the only name we've ever had as a full band. It started out with Pam and Taylor playing acoustic covers at open mic places around town, which was fun, but still unsatisfying. We knew we needed a full rock act. So I started talking to Dave, an old friend of mine to play bass and provide the group with a practice space.
Clinton: I answered their Craigslist ad for a drummer and several months later Evmenios answered a similar Craigslist ad for a keyboard player.

WANLS: Introduce me to the band members and whether they play/sing/etc.

Dave: I am Dave, I play bass guitar and am one of the song writers.
Clinton: While I’m not trying to steal the mic from Pam, I play the drums.

Pam: I sing... and I like to dance! I also handle the majority of our booking, PR and other nuances.
Taylor: I play guitar and do the majority of the art for the band, including the logo, color scheme, and merchandise. Evmenios plays the keys, and also some guitar.

WANLS: Throw your sets up! Fill in the blanks: We love living in ______ because ______.

Taylor: Louisville. It's cooler than New Albany.
Clinton: We love living in Kentucky, because it’s socially acceptable to take children into bars.
Dave: We love living in Louisville, because it is home.
Pam: We Love living in Brooklyn New York, because this response is pure fantasy!

WANLS: Do you guys identify with a particular genre?

Pam: We refer to ourselves as being "Party Punk." I think we're the only band claiming that genere so I guess we're on the forefront of the Party Punk movement.
Dave: Rock
Taylor: We call our music "party punk". It's rock music that is uncomplicated, but always uncompromising, and it's fun to party to.
Clinton: If you’re good, then you can’t be classified into one particular genre. So far, though, we’ve called ourselves "party punk", but I guess you could also call us "party rock" or "party music". Anything with "party" in front of it, really.

WANLS: What are your musical influences?

Clinton: Queen, Foo Fighters, Of Montreal, The Cardigans, Junior Senior, The Sounds, Madonna, Electric Six, Led Zeppelin, No Doubt, Prince, Scissor Sisters, White Stripes and, lots, lots more.
Dave: Local Hardcore, Jazz, Progressive Metal, Blues, YO YO GABBA!
Pam: My musical influences are all over the place... My number one influence is No Doubt. I love the way they are able to play a variety of different music but still consisteantly make it their own. I really love 40's swing, grunge-- I love Nirvana. I adore and kind of idolize Ella Fitzgerald and Eartha Kitt. I like poppy belters like Janelle Monae, Christina Aguleria and Pat Benitar. I'm really into Led Zepplin, and Jimi Hendrix but honestly who isn't? Dance Music like Debora Cox and I do like Britney Spears, and I'm not afraid to admit it.

WANLS: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?

Pam: It's fucking rock and roll! It's party music that'll kick your ass and get you out of your seat.

Clinton: I say that we’re loud and fun.
Taylor: I (Taylor) say we sound kind of like a mix between No Doubt and Bad Religion. Or maybe Aretha Franklin and the Foo Fighters. Or maybe Katy Perry and The Ataris. It's kind of hard to pin down.

WANLS: Do you have or are you signed to a record label?

RRW: No, we aren't. And presently we pride ourselves on being DIY. Everything we've done has been because someone believed in us or we did it ourselves.

WANLS: What are some of your most memorable shows?

Dave: All of them, motherfucker.
Clinton: Our show at the Highlands Taproom was very memorable because the crowd demanded an encore, and it wasn’t just our friends, it was people who heard us playing from the street and walked into the bar.
Taylor: We played a show on right before Halloween this year, which was totally amazing. First of all, we had two other really great bands playing with us, Accidentally on Purpose and The Vibrolas. Everyone was in costume and we had these silly decorations hanging up everywhere. And at some point these this couple; a guy and a girl who were really skinny and just trashed, were performing sex acts in the back of the bar. I have to say that was our best show yet.
Pam: It was not our best performance, but it was one of my more memorable experiences. I put togther a show with the help of Clinton and some of my neighbors-- it was a free all-day show held at the Art Studio owned by my landlord (she's also a great friend) and it was the first time that a lot of people got the chance to see us play... we had previously only played one show at Clinton's house. It was a great experience-- it was incredibly hot, and we were all sweating up a storm. But everyone was really excited and they were thrilled about the show!!

WANLS: Who writes your music?

Clinton: I was under the impression that Pam found the music etched into giant stone tablets whilst on a vision quest atop a mountain, but it turns out that she,
Taylor and Dave actually wrote it all.
Dave: All of us...except for Clinton (Legally drummers don't write music)
Taylor: We all have a hand in the writing process. Usually, someone, either Dave or Pam, or I will come up with a melody and some lyrics, and then we all take that raw idea and turn in into full songs. Or one of us will just come in with some chords and be like "i like this, can we turn it into a song", and someone else will be like "i have some lyrics but no music". So we'll take those single elements and rework them so they all fit together.

WANLS: Tell me about the in-studio/music making process for your band.

Clinton: Usually Taylor or Dave will play a guitar riff, I’ll put drums to it and the song will grow from there. We usually make changes to it at each practice session until we’re satisfied. The studio process was pretty much just us playing live with minimal overdubbing. Pretty simple and to-the-point.
Pam: Sometimes there will already be lyrics to the song, and the guys won't really have a melody for the vocals, but most of the time I write the lyrics. Maybe I already have an idea about the melody. It's never the same thing each time, it really depends on who is coming up with what. It's a reall if it sticks to the wall, than it fits, kinda attitude and I like it. It's really relaxed. The studio was pretty easy. The guys laid down the music and I sang, and we walked away with a kickass EP!

Taylor: Basically, we come in, we kick ass all over the tracks, we grab some lunch, we kick some more ass, then we leave.
Dave: Very open and respectful to each other's song ideas.

WANLS: What direction do you see the band going in 2010? Any specific plans?

RRW: We hope to play a lot of gigs at places we haven’t played before, release our first EP, and grow our following exponentially.

WANLS: Which do you prefer: studio time/creating new music or touring/live shows?

Clinton: I love playing live because afterward the audience walks up to you and tells you how great you are. However, I have to admit that I find creating new music via jam sessions with the band more exhilarating.
Pam: I prefer live shows. Having created original music is fantastic, but I don't think you really know how great it is until you're able to share it with your friends & fans. I'm honestly bored a lot if I didn't create the music, because coming up with vocal layouts for the song is the very last step in the process, so I'm sitting around listening to everyone else work things out for hours, which isn't all that exciting.
Taylor: Me, personally, I prefer doing live shows. I like to think that maybe there's some people out there watching us perform and listening to our music and maybe they can get inspired to do something on their own. It's really weird for me to be up in front of people playing rock music, because i'm usually very anti-social and I have problems communicating with others. But up on stage, none of that shit seems to matter. So I think that maybe people can see me doing that, and it could push them to do something that is scary to them.
Dave: Creating new music is always more fun to me personally. As I get older I am liking people less and less. When we rehearse it is so much more laid back. No pressure.

WANLS: Your fantasy show or tour line up?
Clinton: I would love to play the rooftop of Actors Theatre here in Louisville if they are still doing that next summer. There are tons of groups that I admire and would love to open for, but of those groups, I think Electric Six would be the ones most likely to actually take us up on that offer. The audience wouldn’t know what hit them.

Taylor: Taylor: Well, if it's a fantasy show, then I want to play with the Sex Pistols circa 1977 and Eminem circa 1999. Something more realistic would be to play with the Warped Tour or the Afro-Punk festival or SXSW.
Pam: My fantasy tour would be Tina Turner headlining a tour of female fronted bands including No Doubt, The Lunachicks and The Revenge of Ricky Williams, with Janelle Monea as a special Engagment at big cities like New York and LA.

WANLS: Describe what its like to experience your live shows.
Dave: Oral sex: it may happen.
Taylor: It's cool, we go to these bars, and people see us setting up, and they know some music is about to start. And they're looking at us and our gear and probably trying to figure out what kind of music we're going to play. Our genre is not really obvious just from looking at us, so I imagine that makes people more curious about us. And then they hear us start to play and they're like "oh shit, this is some badass shit these guys brought". And then the sound takes over and people start dancing, and drinking, and dancing and drinking some more. It's all about having fun, you know.
Clinton: It's like being raped and winning the lottery at the same time
Pam: Our live shows are really what makes people go HOLY SHIT YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME because we have this incredible energy that I can't even discribe (should. have. sent. a. poet!) Some people have compared my performance style to Tina Turner (Which is an honor, but I don't really see it) and I was once called, "Arethra Stefani," which was also a badass compliment. Our music is all over the place in style, speed and even tone... I think the best discription of our live shows is that post-orgasam glow, only you're drunk and your ears are ringing... because it's freaking LOUD.

WANLS: Fill in the blanks: If it hadn't been for __________, we would have ____________.

Clinton: If it hadn't been for Cragslist, we would have been a duo.
Pam: If it hadn't been for the help of some really awesome neighbors we might have not played our first show out as soon as we did.
Taylor: If it hadn't been for The Revenge of Ricky Williams, we would have nothing to do on a saturday night.

WANLS: Do you have any new music being released soon?

RRW: Yes, our first release, an EP called Past The Legal Limit is due out in January, 2010.

WANLS: Are there videos to any of your songs?

Taylor: Not yet, but I happen to be a very talented filmmaker, and I'm biting at the chance to do music videos.
Clinton: Not yet, but being the creative people that we are, we already have lots of ideas lined up. But no money to make them reality.

WANLS: What's the #1 priority for your band right now?

Clinton: Creating new songs to add to our setlist.
Dave: Exposure
Taylor: Getting to the point where we can all quit our shitty day jobs and play music full-time.
Pam: Making bigger plans & executing them!

Taylor: We're not nearly as cool as some folks think we are. I know every band says that, but it's really true in our case.
Pam: People would never guess that I didn't have a good answer for that question.

WANLS: Best thing about being in your band?

Pam: The best thing about being in this band as opposed to like, any other band is that we have FUN. I love all my bandmates, they're really fun people! I've been exposed to so much more, and we have a really great time doing what we all love. We love to party, we love to get a little wasted from time to time, and we love rocking the fuck out on stage and getting a crowd amped up!
Clinton: Our music is very energetic, so I get lots of cardio. And my bandmates are pretty enjoyable to be around.
Taylor: It's really cool to be at a venue and playing music that I wrote, and we worked on for weeks, pouring over every single note and chord and beat, and to see people out there with their drinks, dancing along with it. And they dont seem to care about how incredibly insecure and fucked-up I am; they just hear fun music and it makes them want to move and dance and have fun. There's a certain connection that we make with people that I can't make any other way.

WANLS: Fill in the blank: One day they're probably gonna name a _________ after our band.

Clinton: one day they're probably gonna name a class action lawsuit after our band.
Taylor: Strain. You know what I mean.
Pam: Cocktail.
Dave: Football Player.

WANLS: Last and most importantly, if you were stranded on a desert island with your bandmates, who would go cannibal first?

Pam: I don't want to eat these guys, are you kidding? Then we'd have no band!! I'd get them to work together and make something to eat out of that sand. There are poverty stricken people who figured out how to make edible cookies out of salt and mud. I'm sure we could do something similar.
Clinton: Me. I need to eat every hour or so.
Taylor: Taylor: Probably me, because these skinny motherfuckers will be looking at me like a Manwich. I'll have to take them all down fast.
Dave: Dunno, I would swim out to my death, before that would happen.

Entrevista: A Dream Asleep

Early in the millenium, Houston hip-hoppers caught the attention of the music industry and the entire world. It seemed that talent flowed as freely amongst the MC's as the "purple stuff" they heralded in their music. But what many don't realize is that Houston has a lot more to offer, music-wise, than freestyles and hot 16's. Put simply: Houston ROCKS. The bands that call Houston home are hotter than ever and poised to take the industry and your ears by storm. Case on point: A Dream Asleep...the 5-piece embodies the new surge of life in The Bayou City's music scene. These dudes definitely have it and they never disappoint. This Saturday (11/28), A Dream Asleep will celebrate the release of their EP, "We Are The Juggernauts," by playing a show at the legendary Fitzgerald's in Houston, along with fellow WANLS faves American Fangs, Peekaboo Theory, thelastplaceyoulook and Cavernous. Seriously, this show will be like sticking your face in a bowl of liquid awesome. Houston, you don't want to miss this. I know I'll be there. I've wanted to interview these guys for awhile and am really glad to be able to bring this to you. A Dream Asleep...they rock, I just roll....let's go!

WANLS: Tell me the name of your band, how it came about, if you ever went by another name and how you guys formed a band.

ADA: A Dream Asleep - It is a metaphor for unrealized/forgotten ambition. After PM Theory split, the brothers Girth picked up Aaron who was in The Kidnap Soundtrack, Justin from A Royal Tragedy and Mike who had been PM Theory's videographer.

WANLS: Introduce me to the band members and whether they play/sing/etc.

ADA: Mike Seals - Vocals; Ryan Girth - Bass; Erik Girth - Guitar/Vocals; Justin Smith - Guitar/ Vocals; Aaron Perez - Drums

WANLS: Throw your sets up! Fill in the blanks: We love living in ____________, because ______________.

ADA: We love living in the past because its comfortable...haha...but really we love living in Houston because its flat, ugly and stanky but we have alot of good friends and family here.

WANLS: Do you guys identify with a particular genre?

ADA: Hardcore

WANLS: What are your musical influences?

ADA: Things and stuff, alot of Punk Rock and Core. Maybe "SOME" Metal... Barbra Streisand and your various barber shop quartets.

WANLS: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?

ADA: Loud, aggressive and energetic.

WANLS: Do you have or are you signed to a record label?

ADA: Nope.. no label as of yet.

WANLS: What are some of your most memorable shows?

ADA: A dream Asleep vs. Skeleton Dick. At Rocbar. Both bands were on stage the whole time. We battled song for song and it was badass!! Also, making our own stage at the last Westheimer Block Party by setting up on the street and just playing was fun too

WANLS: Who writes your music?

ADA: everyone... including you!! and you!!

WANLS: Tell me about the in-studio/music making process for your band.

ADA: We usually start with guitars or drums and work around it until Ryan writes a hook or bridge. Refining comes more when we are sure of what we want from the song.

WANLS: What direction do you see the band going in 2010? Any specific plans?

ADA: Touring!! Everywhere.

WANLS: Which do you prefer: studio time/creating new music or touring/live shows?

ADA: Live shows honestly! That's what we work for mainly.

We also are playing a Punk Rock AIDS awareness show call Destroy The Disease on December 6 at The White Swan in Houston.

You Got a Great Life: On the Road with American Fangs

All things come to an end....sigh. I've had such a great time bringing these tour diaries to you with American Fangs. Now that its over, I'm kinda sad, but look forward to coverage of AF and all their happenings on WANLS. They're good people who make good music and that's what WANLS is all about! WANLS: What's the first thing each of you will do when you get back to Texas?

Gabe: In no particular order, but in some sort of sequence: Sleep. Eat. Love. Get back to work.

WANLS: Tell me about the connections AF has made during this tour.

Gabe: We connected with a lot of new friends, fans, beat makers, bands, club owners, promoters, you name it, we met em. I would get specific on a few but i'm pretty superstitious...so don't yell at me for not giving you the deets. :)

WANLS: How does AF plan to optimize the benefits of this experience through those connections?

Gabe: The same way we would optimize NOT having these new and wonderful connections...keep the wheels rolling by keeping our work ethic tip top.

WANLS: Was it weird having me in the green room before you guys went on, knowing my inner journalist was observing and plotting on things to write about? (Lol)

Gabe: Not at all! You're a very nice wallflower to our green room.

WANLS: Why is AF so prone to spitting giant loogies(not sure how to spell that) on each other on stage?

Gabe: That's probably my fault...I salivate...I'm slanging words at a high rate and movement on stage doesnt stop. I don't usually have the time to swallow it, so I spit it. I don't really need it anyway...but sometimes it lands on the fellas...so they return the favor.

WANLS: What else happens on stage that fans may not notice unless you guys point it out?

Gabe: Extended moments of levitation and mind reading.

WANLS: What are you thinking about when you're performing?

Gabe: Between the songs point, the music being drilled through my soul and the onlookers looks....if I remembered to leave more than 3 days of food for my cat back home.

WANLS: What's happening with AF emotionally as the tour approaches its end?

Gabe: The desire to keep the tour going. The stack of bills that wait at home that won't be paid but used for arts and crafts.

WANLS: AF is hitting the ground running with a show shortly after arriving back in Houston. What's it going to feel like to play for a hometown audience after being in all these other cities?

Gabe: Like a family reunion with games such as Jack Apples...where we bob for apples in a bucket of Jack Daniels (sharma) ... some Texas shit.

WANLS: I hear that you and Justin are the ones awake in the van while everyone else is sleeping most times....any sleep prank stories?

Gabe: Justin must have told you that. Justin actually rides in the trailer, so he doesn't know what goes on.

WANLS: Best meal you guys have had on the road?

Gabe: There are some dope sandwich shops around America and Canada...but every meal is the best even if it's made of dog meat.

WANLS: City with the best hospitality?

Gabe: Don't mean to be too neutral, but all the cities were cha cha cha. The venues were rad. Aren't we so easy to please?

WANLS: Favorite show?

Gabe: We're grateful for every opportunity we have to play...but ATL gets down. Chicago gets down. Toronto and Vancouver get down. Cali Gets down. Highly memorable shows.

WANLS: From what I observed, you guys are really well behaved, as in no crazy groupie chicks, no broken bottles in the green room, that type of thing. How does AF stay so focused with free booze, beautiful women and all other distractions constantly present?

Gabe: We don't forget why we're there. And we don't get caught.

WANLS: You guys seem so genuinely nice. Some artists feel the need to create crazy personas or have monstrous egos. What lessons have u learned as a performer about being yourself?

Gabe: At some point or another you will realize you can't be anybody else but you.

WANLS: Worst meal you've had on tour?

Gabe: See question 11.

WANLS: Worst sleeping situation on the road so far?

Gabe: Can I email you the audio i recorded of Jerry snoring every night?

WANLS: Have you guys been writing any new music while you've been on the road?

Gabe: Everyone's got their ideas, but all that takes shape once we get home.

WANLS: Saul Williams is phenomenal....biggest lesson you've soaked up from your interaction with him?

Gabe: "Patience over anxiety.

"

WANLS: If you guys could play in any city you wanted for the final show of the tour, where would that be and how would you envision an amazing finale performance?

Gabe: The tour itself covered soooo much ground. New big city and state every day if not every other day. I recall the guys wanting to go to Miami, we've never been...and as an amazing finale performance, everyone including the audience would be butt naked, of course.

WANLS: What have you guys been listening to on the road?

Gabe: The Bronx...before Justin left that shit in Portland...., Telefon Tel Aviv, Nirvana, Beck, Glassjaw, Silverchair, alot of the tunes we've been gettin ready to perform after this tour.

WANLS: You guys work your merch table yourselves which allows you to come face to face with fans. Any cool/crazy/interesting fan interactions?

Gabe: Lots of intelligent folks. Someone offered me LSD too. Kenyon got a few gals pregnant just by looking at them.

SIERRA SAYS: This is an actual note left for AF by a fan at one of the shows...I'm not making this stuff up...these guys really do rock!

WANLS: You guys perform songs that aren't on your EP. Where can fans get that music?

Gabe: AT shows and online.

WANLS: In an earlier post, you told us about Keith and his description of the tour as "EPIC." Would you change or add to that at this point?

Gabe: Bananas.

WANLS: What does the Afro-Punk movement mean to you?

Gabe: It means "Come one, Come all." No division. It being such a unique tour, unique people gravitated towards it.

WANLS: What would you say to those bands that are just starting out and dream of releasing an album and touring like American Fangs?

Gabe: Be ready to work and do it yourself. If you want to wait for anyone else but you to get the ball rollin for your music, you might as well not even pack your bags.

WANLS: Other bands have reached out to me expressing their love for American Fangs. Why is this sense of community present in the Afro-Punk movement lacking in so many other scenes and replaced with every band for themselves style of competition?

Gabe: Competition isn't unhealthy. But maybe Matthew Morgan and his peoples know how to create an atmosphere where a lot of art, not just music, can take place and still have that friendly competition. who knows..it's just plain ol' fun.

WANLS: Any thank you's or shout outs that you guys want to give to ppl who have been instrumental to your success thus far, or who've made this tour what it was?

Gabe: Thanks to Afro-Punk for letting us travel the states nationally and internationally and all the people out there who opened their doors and ears.

WANLS: Tell me the name of your band, how it came about, if you ever went by another name and how you guys formed a band.

The Deacon: We're Mama's Dirty Li'l Secret, here to spread the Universal Truth of Mama - to rock hard, rock sexy! We knew we had to have "Mama" in the name and we've always been pretty dirty and you wouldn't really know that just by looking at us... well, I guess you do now.

Damn: I was tired of the motherfuckin' bullshit. I just wanted to rock and I wanted to find two other motherfuckers to rock with me.

The Monster: We met when we were all abducted by the same mothership.

WANLS: Introduce me to the band members and whether they play/sing/etc.

MDLS: The Deacon - the neon-Romeo (vocals, guitar); The Monster: bass, bg vocals

Damn: drums

WANLS: Throw your sets up! Fill in the blanks: We love living in ______, because ______.

The Deacon: We love living in Brooklyn, because Brooklyn rocks! There's a Brooklyn style, a Brooklyn attitude that says "I do me, you do you and we're cool."

Damn: Brooklyn in the home of the new renaissance being squeezed through the butthole of Hollywood East, that's happening right now.

The Monster: Sin. because we're gonna have hell to pay anyway. And New York because it's the only place you can find a real slice of pizza.

WANLS: Do you guys identify with a particular genre?

The Deacon: soul punk.

Damn: Mama Soul and Papa Punk!

WANLS: What are your musical influences?

The Deacon: The Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, Fishbone, 24/7 Spyz, Lenny Kravitz, B-52s, Nine Inch Nails, The Clash, Seal, Prince. The 80's rule!

Damn: The drummers who really rock my world are dudes who just love their fucking drums. Like they're fucking them. Like John "Johnny Mac" Macaluso, Vinne Paul, Tommy Lee, Billy Cobham, Bobby Rock. I set up the kit like a woman (expressionistic, if you will): cymbals are like the hair, the ass is the bass, the toms are like the titties, and of course the snare is the sweet center.

The Monster: On the bass I have no influences, I only have inspirations.

WANLS: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?

The Deacon: soul punk.

The Monster: A little punk, a slice of metal and a dash of soul for flavor.

WANLS:Do you have or are you signed to a record label?

The Deacon: Our own label Shut Your Mouth.

Damn: We're under the corporation of Shut Your Mouth.

The Monster: I don't believe in record labels, that's why we're on our super secret label.

WANLS: What are some of your most memorable shows?

Damn: Any show where people are rocking is a memorable show.

The Monster: I remember this outdoor show we did in Brooklyn, sun shining on my face, motorcycles, chicks...

The Deacon: We try to make every show memorable. Folks put out some effort to go out and expect to be entertained when they see a show. They want to carry the experience with them to tell their friends or coworkers. I'm the exact same when I go to a show; I want to be moved. Make me laugh, cry... make me feel something! So, we keep that in mind for our live shows. And that's what we do, we give you a show.

WANLS: Who writes your music?

MDLS: Damn and I started writing "In Your Mouth" before we unearthed The Monster. But now that it's out, the three of us have been writing together and coming up with some new, fun shit.

WANLS: Tell me about the in-studio/music making process for your band.

The Monster: It's all about intention. You have to know what you idea is and it has to follow through the entire song. My process is... anything; I can write from a drum beat, a melody, sometime it's just a title in my head. The title will give me the intention.

Damn: I'm more in line with how Monster writes. I will write on anything except the guitar. I really love writing on the bass. I'm most inspired by everyday things.

The Deacon: We get all of the songs written and worked out before we hit the studio. Which, for right now, is my laptop and the MDLS headquarters! I actually hate recording. It bores the fuck out of me! Most of the time you're just sitting around waiting. BORING. Although, it beats sitting behind a desk answering emails for some company any fucking day! As for writing, I'm used to sitting in my dimly lit room, my cave, and let the Universe guide the way. I usually write the music first. I just can't write full lyrics without the music. Like a painter, the music is a canvas for me, I need to know the parameters in which I'm working.

WANLS: What direction do you see the band going in 2010? Any specific plans?

The Deacon: We need more wenches.

Damn: Beginning our stride on world domination.

The Monster: (imitating The Brain) Doing the same thing we do every night... trying to take over the world.

WANLS: Which do you prefer: studio time/creating new music or touring/live shows?

Damn: I think that they all feed into each other. You have to share the creation. You have to go from the creating which give Mama her being, her sound. But you have to share it, you can't just keep it locked it up in a room.

The Monster: Studio is the lowest. It's all about getting to the live show.

I've been working on LOTS of newness for you guys. Since we're rolling into the holiday season, I figured I'd give you a little sneak peek of some of what I'm bringing to you in the next few weeks. The Park just has it. I heard them and was speechless. Amazingly talented musicians in the truest sense of all those words! They are constantly playing shows with Ms. Alice Russell or on the road, but I got them to sit down for a sec to answer some questions just for you!

If I could pick out everything I love about music and mash it up into one band, the result would be Peekaboo Theory. I'm not gonna lie, these guys are definitely among my favorite bands ever....you'll see why:)

WANLS: Any favorite moments this past week on or off stage?

Gabe: Throwing up on camera while playing a rock trivia/drinking game against the band The Smyrks and singing Sunday Bloody Sunday with Saul Williams...(i get a lil bashful wtf?!)

WANLS: How does American Fangs pass the time on the road during the between city drives?

Gabe: Jesus! Other than the simple pleasures of reading, talking on the phone and resting between long drives, we're usually buying fireworks and shooting them as we drive threw various towns. We enjoy plastering our stickers all across town. We utilize iphones like crazy by hooking through the AUX patch in our van and pranking any and everyone including gas stations, escort services, "massage parlors", and different clubs. On a more positive note...all of the fuckery tends to happen AFTER we've handled up on our family, music and writing business :)

WANLS: What's a typical day in the life of American Fangs been like this past week?

Gabe: Long fuckin drives. No bathing. Lots of curse words and lots of sweat. It's grind time...we wouldn't have it any other way.

WANLS: Walk us through the last ten minutes before American Fangs goes on stage.

Gabe: Right after we've all done some stretching, guzzling of water and beer, we tend to jump up and down and talk mad shit to each other and in between that I'm usually puking up whatever I ate and/or drank because I get overly excited before shows...to the point of vomit.

WANLS: What have you absorbed from witnessing the AP scene in other cities that you feel could help the scene in Houston (hometown to your truly and American Fangs) to develop?

Gabe: Honestly, if Afro-punk set up a string of TX dates that included Houston, with some great promo, it would be in the bag and I would love to help that become a reality. I'm positive after this tour TX and Houston will see a great Afro-punk festival..show..a fuckin carnival!! The scene in other cities is wonderful...and growing.

WANLS: Anything you guys want to say to the fans who have been writing in about how much they love the tour diary.?

Gabe: Keep showing love. Hit us up online whether you buy our EP or not! Tell your people about us, and more importantly, let us know when and where we can come to YOUR CITY. Let us know whats up in YOUR lives. We want to know, and we want to spread the word for you mutually!

3. Afro-punk is coming to town! The Afro-punk tour makes a stop in the Bay Area on Tuesday, November 10th for a show at The Independent in San Francisco. Very much looking forward to welcoming American Fangs, Saul Williams and the rest of the crew into town.

4. After that, I'm gearing up to go home to Houston, Texas for Thanksgiving and while I'm there, I'll be cooking up some newness for you guys with...drumroll please....Peekaboo Theory!

WANLS: How does it feel to be performing nearly every day again?

Gabe: Performing everyday is, how we say, "where we get our bones." Saul was talking to me about how it take 3-4 shows to really "pop the cork" off and it's totally true. Each show gets better and better, and on day 6 our band felt like we had our touring shoes back on.WANLS: What cities have you hit in the past week?

Gabe: So far we've blazed through Toronto (shouts to the Ooh Baby Gimme Some Mores), Minneapolis(shouts to No Bird Sings), Detroit...like all the cities we hit, there's something special in Detroit...the people have the biggest spirits and Chicago...which, if i could compare to anything, it woulda been like jumping out of a plane and testing one of those gnarly wing suits!!!

WANLS: What's been surprising to you?

Gabe: I think Afro-punk likes us :) And we love them. We're becoming great friends day by day with everyone in the Afro-punk camp and as long as my band keeps their clothes on and doesn't blow up Saul's tour bus - which (they dont know this) has come pretty close to happening - we'll continue to make beautiful music madness together.

WANLS: Have you guys performed in any of the cities you've hit before now?

Gabe: We were going to dress up as women..ugly women...but when we tried on the outfits we just looked like dudes that couldn't dress for shit so we came as ourselves...broke and skinny. (SIERRA SAYS: This is by far my fave answer this week...lol)

WANLS: Did you guys actually play on Halloween or was that a day off?

Gabe: We DID play MASS on Halloween...fun fun show...they didn't allow filming in the venue which blew but it was still a badass ashow.

WANLS: Best American Fangs costumes from past Halloweens?

Gabe: I have yet to see my guys dress up in a dope halloween costume, but I did dress up as a bag of chips last year. It was a hit.

WANLS: One word to describe the tour so far?

Gabe: Straight up, I would say the word would be "Keith," but you dont know Keith yet, but you're gonna meet him!! He's the life of the party on the tour and we love the shit outta this dude. So I just ran up to him and interrupted his Street Fighter match in the Days Inn lobby, and said "Yo Keith! One word to describe the tour..." and rightfully so he replied: "EPIC."

Good day ladies and gents! I hope everyone had a safe and fun Halloween:) This entrevista is a treat for all you fashion freaks out there! Purple Pill Babies is a clothing company born out of Brooklyn, NY. Their designs are fresh and funky, but that's not all there is to love about this company. The top dog in this operation is a fearlessly driven WOMAN!Her name is Tasiya (tuh-sigh-yuh), but you can call her the Purple Girl from Brooklyn:) She's an unsaturated designer, introductory activist (African National Science) and all around inspiration! Tasiya took some time out of her busy schedule to let WANLS and all of you out there in on the happenings in her head. Wanna hear it? Here it goes:

WANLS: What's the last song you listened to?

PPB: I have to choose one??? lol! There are always at least 10 songs playing in my head, just kidding(not really) but, um...Kid Cudi - My World. He makes me feel like feel like there is a place for weird loners in success and in the hood!

WANLS: What gets you started in the morning?

PPB: The thought of pushing my clothing line jumps me up every morning!! Or the smell of flesh cooking in my crib....I'm vegan in da hood, but mom dukes fries her bacon in the morning like I don't exist! Ha at me!WANLS: What's #1 on your priority list right now?

PPB: Funny I was just listening to Mos Def's song "Priority." Top priority is mental health and freedom!!! Nothing matters at all with out it!! Nothing!! I'm not money driven, I'm driven by great energy, knowledge and creative freedom (whether fashion or just living)!

Game Rebellion ROCKED 330 Ritch in San Francisco last night! As if we expected anything less from them, right? Although they were preparing to hit the stage already when I got there, the guys made some time to sit down with me for part 1 of my interview before their set. You Got a Great Life: On the Road with American Fangs

James Spooner's 2003 documentary was the first that many had ever heard of the Afro-Punk sub-culture. Afro-Punks around the country have since united through the official website of the movement, www.afropunk.com. 2009 has been exceptionally kind to AP. The annual Afro-Punk Festival in Brooklyn grows each year, always featuring some of the best AP bands and skaters out there - think VANS Warped Tour with lots of dreadlocks, fros and brown skin and every single band that plays is AMAZING:) This year's festival even featured Black Punk pioneers, Pure Hell! Well, 2009 is not over yet and AP is making the most of it by kicking off the first ever Afro-Punk Tour. Saul Williams headlines this historic lineup, which also features Houston, Texas natives American Fangs, who have also taken 2009 by storm with the release of their first EP, self-titled American Fangs. Over the next few weeks, as the AP tour makes its way across the country, I will be teaming up with the Fangs to give you an up close and personal look at life on the Afro-Punk tour from their point of view, in their words!

As down to earth as he is talented, American Fangs' frontman, Gabriel Cavazos has agreed to start things off by answering a few questions for us, as yesterday was the end of week 1 of the tour.

SIERRA SAYS: What's the first stop on the tour?

GABE SAYS: Our first stop is the House of Blues In Cleveland, Ohio.

SIERRA SAYS: What are you guys looking forward to the most from this tour?

GABE SAYS: Honestly, we look forward to the road in general...the best and the worst that the road can bring! I woke up in the parking lot of a Walmart in Kentucky and although it's not the most comfortable sleep (12 passenger van w/ people) I got up, smelled some clean air, took a look around and was pretty pleased w/ the notion that I was once again, cruisin' the USA w/ my boys....And of course, you know I'm lookin forward to experiencing Saul Williams, AF and the surprises the Afro-Punk tour is about to present us with!

SIERRA SAYS: Introduce us to the band, please.

GABE SAYS:
I'll definitely introduce you to by band:

We've got Mitch on drums, he's also our "Donald Trump" of the band. He tends to be the mouth of the band when it comes to bridging the relationships between the band and the folks involved in the biz. But despite his cordial and crisp way of takin care of biz...he can be a loose cannon..so keep an eye on him.

There's Kyle, our bass player. He's the silent giant. He's one of the guys that should be endorsed not only by musical equipment, but by Home Depot. He's the MacGyuver of the band. Remember that show? Me either...:)

We have Kenyon on lead guitar. He's the unofficial muscle of the band. He doesn't know that yet, it won't be official until he quits smokin ciggs. So bad for your muscles.

And I musn't forget Jeff Deuce, our other guitarist. He is the unofficial 2nd guitarist at the moment, a subject we rarely touch on, and dude is a savior. He also produced and tracked our debut Ep which we have been promoting all of 2009.

Did I forget anyone? Oh yah, and myself, the guy with many names..Gus, Gabriel, Flipping Dagger, and Gabe...as u refer to me. I am the vocalist and lyricst of the band. I'm not goin to volunteer too much information about myself because that would be weird. I will say this though:

I'm Proud :)

I totally forgot to mention the 6th passenger in our van!

We only refer to him as "Wolf." He is our tour manager and to be honest...I'm not exactly sure who hired him! One day we're gigging..doin as much as we can, and the next we have this fearless, chatterbox of fellow riding the states with us...causing an uproar everywhere we go all the while handling our merchandise sales, equipment load in/out, phone calls and other day to day mess. I'm not even sure where this guy lives. But currently he lives with us and I must include him in this interview for he has joined in on the bloodsucking with the American Fangs.

I must admit that I cringed when I first heard about Slim Thug's appearance on Comedy Central's Daily Show. Come on, you know why...few have been as seamlessly successful as Jamie Foxx when it comes to pulling recording artist/actor (and vice versa) double duty. But, since the Big Boss of the North is from my hometown (and neighborhood), I checked it out yesterday...I was SO IMPRESSED! I think Slim did an EXCELLENT JOB! White-Washed: The Protrayal of Black Women in Mainstream Media and the Fashion Industry

Note the minimal difference in the complexions of Whitney Houston, Katie Holmes and Monica! If we are all equal and race doesn't matter, why is this necessary?* I hope you enjoy reading my thoughts below:

Despite notable strides taken towards the inclusion of Black women, mainstream media and the fashion industry have far to go towards embracing and celebrating Black beauty. A walk past any newsstand or a flip through the channels on cable television quickly cements the fact that Black women are not as thoroughly represented in the media as their white counterparts. Perhaps even more disheartening is the aesthetic censoring that some companies find necessary in order to include Black women in their ad campaigns or runway shows. Whether altogether exclusion, or caste-based discrimination, much is left to be desired from the less than adequate depiction of Black as beautiful in fashion and advertising.

In 2008, L’Oreal, the largest cosmetic company in the world, found itself under fire for allegedly using photo-editing software to lighten spokesmodel Beyonce Knowles’ skin tone in an ad campaign for its Feria line of hair dyes.

The L’Oreal case is one of the first to draw such public scrutiny, but the issue at the heart of the scandal has persisted for quite some time. More often than not, images of fairer-skinned Black women are readily available in the pages of fashion magazines or other types of media, while darker-skinned Black women, whose skin tones are perhaps more readily identified with their African roots, remain underrepresented. In some publications or fashion houses, Black women are excluded entirely, regardless of their skin tone. Cosmetics giant L’Oreal denies lightening Ms. Knowles skin in its ads, while critics maintain that comparisons of the ad, alongside other pictures of the star, clearly show otherwise. Regardless, the message that Black skin is not beautiful has been made painfully clear.

Another point of controversy in the portrayal of Black women in media stems from what seems to many to be a trivial subject: hair. The debate over whether or not to embrace one's natural hair texture or to chemically or otherwise alter the hair has existed in the Black community for decades. Many believe that altering, namely straightening, the hair’s natural texture means rejecting the physical traits that are distinct to our African descent in order to yield a more "European" look. For years, the media and fashion industry have sent the message that this hair is nothing short of unacceptable to portray beauty and sex appeal. In recent years, this situation has improved. Many Black women now refuse to straighten their hair and even some models are seen photographed with their hair in its unaltered state. Unfortunately, the recent Malia Obama hair scandal is a reminder that the stigma surrounding Black women's hair still exists. While on vacation in London, the 10-year old first daughter's hair was styled in what are known as two-strand twists, a popular style option for Black women with “natural” hair.

Once photos from the trip surfaced, the press tore into the young girl's appearance, calling her hair "undone" and calling her "unfit to appear in public" with such a style. This unfortunate tragedy shines a bright light on the widely held mindset that natural Black hair is ok-but not in front of the camera, in ad campaigns, on runways or on the head of an American first daughter.

The Clark Doll Experiment was a 1939 study on racial identity and perception conducted on young Black children by Dr. Kenneth Clark. The children were presented with two dolls: one Black, one White. They were then asked to make choices, including which doll they’d most like to play with, which looks “bad,” which looks “nice,” and which most resembled themselves. The majority of the children chose the Black doll as looking “bad.” This can almost certainly be attributed to the negative connotation of “Blackness” in what was, at the time, a very racially divided America. Even worse, after identifying the Black doll in such an unsavory light, Dr. Clark reported that many of the children cried and ran away when asked to choose the doll that more closely resembled them. This experiment was repeated and documented in the 2005 film A Girl Like Me by Kiri Davis. In the new study, a shocking 15 out of 21 children (all were Black, as in the original Clark study) chose the fairer skinned doll when asked which was the “nice” doll. This illustrates the weight of racial inequality that has trickled down from a painful past of prejudice and become poison in the minds of these, the most innocent victims. With the advent of information technology, we are continuously exposed to media in come form. Although not charged with the primary responsibility of raising our next generation of leaders, teachers and thinkers, the media does play a significant role in their growth and development. Every little girl should be proud, rather than ashamed of the traits and features that make us all uniquely beautiful. In a world that has made such progress towards parity and justice for all, perhaps destroying the prejudices of the media and fashion industries is one of the last unconquered frontiers.

Longer, Better, Faster, STRONGER!

When I BC'd in March of this year, my hair was less than 2 inches long all over. Since then, my hair has been growing and has become uber healthy! I credit this to the Lord above, the hints, tips and inspiration I receive from natural hair cites/blogs (http://blackgirllonghair.blogspot.com/, http://www.curlynikki.com/, http://www.naturalhairnaturalproducts.com/, http://lecoil.tumblr.com - those are my faves) and tons of trial and error on my own. I've come a long way baby....I'm learning more all the time and hope to share more hair tips as I get braver and start to experiment with different styles. Here are a few pics of my new staple style. When my hair was shorter, I would just cover it with a scarf at night and go to sleep. Now if I do that, I wake up with flattened portions and an all around mess....not cute! So I've been braiding my hair at night and sealing the ends with Iyoba Hair and Body Butter. I met the owner and purchased this product straight from her and it is a God send! It's made from African shea butter, mango butter, cocoa butter, olive oil, coconut oil and essential fragrant oils....my favorite scent is the fresia lemongrass....mmmmmm:)
But I digress, I seal the ends with the Iyoba butter after I braid my hair at night. I don't cornrow it, I do individual braids, anywhere from 8 to 12 of them. I almost forgot, before brainding, I mist my hair very lightly with plain water in a spray bottle (misting, not saturating). In the morning, I take the braids down and voila! Enjoy the pics.

Overdue, Like an 11 Month Pregnancy!

I am sooooooo long overdue for a blog update...it's almost embarrassing! Until my schedule calms down a little, my posts will be a bit shorter than what you're used to from me. With that being said, here are some pics of my very first twistout:) I wore it for a week, and probably could have rocked it a little longer, but I'm not a fan of milking the style for too long because I get bored with the look. The pics are in reverse order (sorry about that). The bottom ones are day two of the style. Then the black tshirt pics are from day three. I wore it like that for a couple more days, pinned back on one or both sides in the front to give it a funky variation (plus this was a great way to camouflage the frizz in the front...hehe) On the last day I wore it, I decided to pin it back on the top and wear the back out under a hat. I washed it the next day because I was missing the fro:) Take a look at the pics and let me know what you think.
